A new fitness concept is taking Gloucestershire by storm. You may have  noticed people walking with what look like ski poles, they are in fact  'Nordic Walking' !

What is it?

Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking - it makes something we  all do twice as effective!I

It is not to be confused with trekking, hill walking or trail running as the poles are not planted in front of the walker, but in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body.It can be done by anybody, anywhere and does not require the use of expensive equipment or clothing.Nordic walking can be used as a fitness technique, healthy walking, for rehabilitation purposes and is a highly effective exercise for sports conditioning.

Nordic Walking uses poles to add two major benefits to walking:

1.The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used, as well as the legs.

2.The poles help propel the walker along - this means you work harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!

Important!

The Nordic Walking technique MUST be learnt correctly if you are to get the most out of the activity.Lack of proper instruction runs the risk of Nordic Walking being consigned to "just walking with poles".

Good instruction ensures you get an almost instant 'buzz' and have an exercise you can perform safely and effectively, finding a social exercise you will want to tell your friends all about!
